Natural materials in jewelry: materials from the ocean

During this course we will take a look at all the beautifull materials nature offers us to work with. We will concentrate on materials from the ocean like coral, shells, pearls, fishleather, skeleton and quills from the sea-urchin,...

 

This course includes a theorethical and a practical part. First we will discuss the different materials and their properties. You will learn how to manipulate them en use them in jewelry by using cold connections (adhesive bonding, setting, inlay, riveting,...).

 

We will discuss several jewelry designs to discover all the possibilities. After that you start working on your own design. You will create your designs in the studio with help from the teacher.

To bring yourself:

  • pencil
  • paper
  • an apron if you wish
  • silver plate and wires, 1 mm thickness (quantity is depending on your own design)
  • basic jewelry materials: round plier, half round plier, flat plier, shear, saw frame and sawblades, drills (0.7, 0.8, 1 mm),needle files, big files, sanding paper, silver solder (hard, medium, soft), soldering flux and dish, tweezer, centre punch, charcoal block for soldering, compass, measering rule, third hand with tweezer, binding wire, steel scriber
